Blogmas Day 40: How to create a habit tracker to help you achieve your goals + free template!

I’m so excited about working toward my goals for 2018 and centering my word of the year in all my practices, but part of achieving your goals is developing systems that motivate you and hold you accountable. A lot of my goals for this year rely on instilling new, healthy habits into my life. It can be really hard to start new habits, but I’m excited about the system I’ve developed to work on my 2018 healthy habits! Check out my habit tracker method in this post and keep reading through the end for a free download of your own printable habit tracker template!

If you want to know more about my overall goal setting process, you can read about the initial steps here and read about how I follow up with my goals here. I'm so excited about my goals for 2018, but they involve instilling some brand new habits. What better way to do that than with a habit tracker? Habit trackers are really popular in the bullet journal community, and while I don’t personally use a bullet journal, I love getting inspired by the beautiful spreads people create. I decided to go with a very simple habit tracker style, because I think I’ll be more motivated to actually track habits if the process is simple and takes just a minute or two.

My habit tracker

I’m doing my habit tracking in my catch-all notebook, which you can read more about here. (Seriously, you should read that post. I’m in love with this planning system I’ve created for myself!)

I’m sorry for the horrendous quality of the photo of my habit tracker. I normally wouldn’t post a picture this bad but I really wanted to include a photo so you guys could see how it actually plays out in my real life and I didn’t time this post well enough to be able to snap a pic when the lighting was good.

As you can see, not all of my goals lend themselves to habit tracking. I’m currently tracking nine habits, but there’s plenty of room to add more if I want to! The nine habits I’m tracking are:

  1. Following a daily skincare routine
  2. Writing in my gratitude journal
  3. Writing in my regular journal
  4. Reading for fun
  5. Taking a photo or video every day
  6. Drinking a bottle of water every day
  7. Working on my blog
  8. Doing at least one healthy thing per day
  9. Spending no money that day

Most of these are daily goals, but I obviously do need to spend money sometimes. I’m tracking no spend days in an effort to help myself become aware of how frequently I spend money (because it’s usually not a necessity!)

I plan on coloring in the little boxes beside all of the things I did that day at night right before I go to bed. I want to work this into my new nightly routine (which is going to loop in a few of these things: “unplug” – nighttime skincare – regular journal – gratitude journal – read – habit track). I’m excited to see all the colored boxes build up as I build up these habits!

Your habit tracker

If you have a bullet journal, catch-all notebook, or planner, I definitely recommend creating your habit tracker in there. You’re way more likely to actually use a new system if you build it into a system you’re already dedicated to using. However, if you don’t have a system your tracker would fit in with, I’ve created a really simple template that you can download, print, and use to track the habits that will help you reach your goals!

I wanted to make this template really simple because I want it to be a good jumping off point for anybody. I’m a big fan of functional planning and I always like my templates simple because I can always add color as I go!

If you download my template, I’d love to see pictures of you using it once you work it into your planning systems. Tweet me, post on Instagram or Facebook and tag me, or email me pictures and I’ll definitely feature you. I can’t wait to see you achieving your goals!

    • I’ve been loving it so far! It’s definitely helped me feel way more on top of actually following through on my goals

  • What a cool idea! I have to try this! Especially when it comes to using my phone in bed – such a bad habbit 😉 Thank you!
    xx, Theresa

  • This is amazing! I’ve recently been adding “bottle 1 | bottle 2 | bottle 3 | bottle 4” to my planner so that I can cross something off every time that I drink a bottle of water. I really love the way that you’ve incorporated all of your goals into one sheet, especially the one about spending money!

    • Totally feel you on that! Part of my goal for this year is to really stick to a bedtime routine and filling out my habit tracker has been part of it. The habit tracker has helped me with my routine and my routine has helped me stick to the habit tracker so it’s a win-win!

  • Azanique

Okay I totally need this checklist. I have so many goals I need to get more organized with all my goals this year.

I’ve been back and forth about creating a habit tracker in my bullet journal (since it’s for my blog) but now I’m convinced that I definitely need to to do it!! I love that you can see your habits at a glance and it’s definitely the accountability I need in 2018.

    • It’s been such a game changer for me honestly! It’s so good to have an easy visual of what kind of progress I’m making toward achieving my goals.
