Dark Places by Gillian Flynn

4 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Read from January 9, 2019 – February 9, 2019.

This book reminded me of a criminal minds episode, which is to say I really really liked it. It was super suspenseful and kept me guessing the whole time. I liked the way the different perspectives were used to slowly reveal the details of the story and keep me on my toes. The ending was good but not great. It felt a bit rushed and like the author felt the need to tie a neat bow after a story that didn’t necessarily call for that.

The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman

2 stars ⭐⭐

Read from February 9, 2019 – February 17, 2019.

This book was fine, but not anywhere near as captivating a story as the first book. It really felt like a middle book in a trilogy (which it is) that serves to connect the first and third rather than be much of a story in its own right. I’ll have to read the third to see if that’s true. I liked the main story of this book, with Will and Lyra, but I wasn’t interested in the chapters centering on the side characters.

Final Girls by Riley Sager

4 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Read from February 17, 2019 – February 24, 2019.

Halfway through this book, I wouldn’t have anticipated giving it a four-star review. But, the twists and turns the story took toward the end were awesome. The story was captivating, I really wasn’t expecting most of the twists, and I really liked the way the story wrapped up. I feel like I’ve read a few books in this vein recently and the ending is always the weakest part, but Final Girls did not disappoint. If you’re going to pick up this book, just note there are some disturbing themes, graphic descriptions of violence, descriptions of sex, and coerced sex in the book. Everything included adds to the story, but there’s lots of content to be wary of if you’re sensitive to those themes.

February is a shorter month so I didn’t get through as many books, but the ones I read were quite good! Have you read any of these? Got any book recommendations for me? Leave them in the comments below!
